Project Scope

Before the completion of the new bedroom installation, I was assigned to completely gut and update the bathroom that adjoined the room and the second storage room, which would later become the kitchen. Previously I mentioned that the building was about 75 years old and that it was mostly untouched and still had its original charm. Most people would probably interpret that as sarcasm, but it was not. I tried to keep the bathroom as intact as possible. There was a good bit of additional tedious work because of the upcycling, but in the end I feel it worked out well.
Similar to the other rooms, the electrical in this area was no different. Un-grounded, lights that were controlled by pull chains instead of switches, and two switches on the wall that would have, at one time, operated a ceiling fixture –which shorted and had long since been removed. For the most part, I worked on the plumbing and demolition of the area before finishing the bedroom. Being able to run modern BX wiring through the old electrical channel already in the walls was a very pleasant surprise. I was also able to complete the concrete-encased plumbing before putting the walls up in the neighboring rooms.
Task List
This bathroom took about a month and a half worth of weekend work, requiring the following milestones:
Unfortunately, as you will see in the photos, the room took several design iterations which required several rounds of rework. These included removing the first replacement medicine cabinet I was given and upgrading to a larger cabinet. Later, the client requested that the floor be replaced after all of the fixtures were installed and that the second doorway be closed up during the kitchen installation for additional privacy. You will notice in the photos that the ceiling tiles were not proper for wet locations. This was a temporary solution to clean up the area for an event the following weekend and were left over from the bedroom. They have since been replaced.
Overall, I loved the final outcome. It is a clean looking, modern bath with some of the original fixtures and materials for a vintage feel. Check out the gallery below and take a look at the progress and final outcome!
